The Pool House, Lamu Town

This is the only private home in Lamu  town with a swimming pool. It is situated in the old part of the town where many of the grand old stone houses are located, about 5 minutes walk from the centre. The house is a complex of buildings surrounding three separate courtyards filled with fragrant tropical trees and plants. One of the courtyards contains the freshwater pool. There are two self-contained buildings, each with a double bedroom, dressing room, full bathroom with hot and cold water and roof terrace.

The beds are beautiful, hand carved, four-poster affairs with yards of mosquito netting. One of the roof terraces is partially covered by a thatched roof, has a hammock and swinging bed from which you can enjoy a lovely panoramic view of Lamu and the bay. At night it is a perfect spot for stargazing. Other buildings house a third bedroom, bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area and a verandah overlooking the pool. One courtyard has a jasmine covered pergola and a separate grill area for outdoor dining. At night all courtyards are candle lit for a magical effect.

The house has gradually been renovated in the Swahili style with lovely plaster work, tall ceilings and a mix of antiques and new furniture, all made by local crafts people. The house is looked after by a house steward who takes care of the cleaning, laundry and the pool, and a professionally trained cook who is experienced in preparing both local and European cuisine. The rental includes breakfast (fresh fruit juices, tea, coffee, French toasts, omelettes) and laundry services.
